Coot

(Fulica atra)

This widespread and resident bird is a relative of the Moorhen. It is found in mainly lowland areas where there is shallow water, with a muddy bottom and plenty of vegetation. During the winter months it can be a very gregarious bird forming large flocks on inland lakes and gravel pits but during the breeding season can be very elusive and very aggressive to others. The Coot shown in the photo below was part of a large winter flock. I captured him basking in some warm winter sunshine.

During mid/late winter the Coot becomes more aggressive as he seeks out a mate and a breeding territory. The bird in the photo below is showing an aggressive posture.

In contrast to their gregarious and often aggressive nature during the summer months they become much more shy and retiring and cannot be approached readily. Coots generally produce between 4 and 8 young which fledge at 55-60 days.
