Cuban whistling duck

(Dendrocygna arborea)

Also known as the West Indian or Black billed Whistling duck. This is considered to be a vulnerable species for extinction in the wild due to wetland drainage and illegal hunting, as well as predation by introduced mongooses. It can be found throughout the Bahamas, Greater Antilles, and Lesser Antilles south to Martinique. The sexes are alike.

At the beginning of September I was surprised to see ducklings at Slimbridge. They were only a few days old. For more photographs of them see the next page.
