Curlew

(Numenius arquata}

With its evocative, haunting call and large size this is one of the most recogniseable waders of moorland and coastal estuary. Its breeding habitat includes damp upland pastures and meadows, moorland, low land pasture and coastal marshes. Loss of suitable habitat due to intense farming methods has led to the serious decline of this species. In winter it is found mainly in coastal areas. It feeds on a diet of worms, shellfish and shrimps.
