Eiders breed very well at Martinmere. Most get reared in the nursery but some nests do go undetected with broods being raised on the lakes. (photo below)

Eventually the young ducks are released onto a lagoon of their own whilst they mature further. These juveniles are about 3 months old. It will be two years before the males develop their fine adult plumage.
