The Freckled Duck is a moderatly large,
broad billed duck. It is a rare bird (classified as endangered) found
in inland south-eastern Australia and south Western Australia. Such
is its status that it is protected in all states and it is an offence
to shoot them. Their habitat is generally in fresh, densely vegetated
waters, particularly floodwater swamps and creeks vegetated with lignum
or canegrass. It is a quiet duck, seldom making any noise. Its future
survival depends not upon hunters but upon the existance of suitable
habitat being lost to farming and an increasingly dry climate. |
