Fulmar

Fulmarus glacialis

Also known as the Northern Fulmar this small chunky bird is related to the Albartross. During the breeding season they can be found on coastal cliffs with suitable ledges and grassy slopes. Away from the breeding colonies it spends its whole time at sea where it flies low over the water on stiff shallow wingbeats. It feeds on a diet of fish waste and crustaceans and spits out a foul smelling oil at any intruders to their nest. Because of their ability to do this they are also called tubenoses. The bird in the photo below was found nesting on Bamburgh castle, Northumberland May 2006.
