Golden Plover

(Pluvialis apricaria)

A medium sized plover found breeding on upland moors, grassland and bogs mainly in the north and west of the UK. In the winter months it is more widespread as it moves on to inland grass and arable fields and towards the coast onto saltmarshes. The largest flocks are seen between Novemeber and February. It feeds on a diet of worms and beetles. The birds in the photo below are in winter plumage. They have a distinctive black face and breast in their summer plumage.
