Greylag Goose

(Anser anser)

The true native species is one of the largest geese in Europe and the UK. Wild birds visit Scotland and Northern Ireland in the winter but they are much scarcer in England. Flocks found in England around gravel pits, lakes and reservoirs all year round are smaller, tamer birds. They also tend to hybridise with domestic geese and also with Canada geese, thus producing white and mixed coloured forms. The goose in the photo below is a wild bird. The others are feral forms.

The white domestic goose is a hybrid from the Greylag goose and is seen much more often on lakes, reservoirs and ponds.
