Guillemot

Uria aalge

A familiar sight to our coastal cliffs the Guillemot is one of the UKs commonest breeding seabirds. It comes ashore only to breed and will spend the rest of its time out at sea sometimes only coming inshore after gales or when passing large headlands. Breeding takes place anywhere that there are sheer cliffs in large colonies from from March to the end of July. Their diet consists of fish and crustaceans. There is also a bridled form that has a white ring that goes around the eye (bottom photo)
