Hottentot teal

(Anas hottentota)

Weighing in at a mere 8-9 ounces this is one of the smallest of the African ducks. Its most striking feature is its beautiful blue bill which it opens underwater and swims along catching food such as insects and crustaceans. It will also eat grass and seeds. In the wild it can be found in eastern and southern Africa and Madagascar where it prefers to live in freshwater marshes, inland waters and flood plains. They are non migratory birds that live in pairs or small groups. The sexes are alike.
