European Jay

(Garrulus glandarius)

A member of the crow family this is one of my favourite woodland birds. Instantly recognizable by its pink colour, white rump and harsh, screeching call, it is a widespread resident bird found in deciduous and coniferous woodland or in large parks with mature trees. Although they are quite large birds 34-35cm they can be quite shy and wary making them difficult to see well. Its diet consists of acorns, nuts, seeds and insects. Acorns are a real favourite and are often buried during the autumn for eating later in the winter months.
