Totally unmistakeable, these beautiful
birds are most often seen as streaks of brilliant turquoise blue as
they fly rapidly over lowland watercourses and lakes, often omitting
a high pitched whistle as they fly. The kingfisher is a widespread bird,
being most prolific in central and southern England. The further north
you go the less widespread they become. During the summer they can be
found along any river, lake or gravel pit where there are suitable banks
for excavation of nest sites. During the winter months some birds move
to coastal areas. It feeds on a diet of aquatic insects and fish. |
