A dumpy short legged grey wading bird that
visits our coasts during the winter months. Breeding in the Arctic tundra
it can be found on estuaries and mudflats here in the winter. In winter,
It is grey above and white below. In summer the chest, belly and face
are brick-red. In flight, it shows a pale rump and a faint wing-stripe.
In winter they form huge flocks that wheel and turn and create spectacular
displays. Their diet consists of shellfish and worms. Can be seen around
UK coasts between August and May. Largest numbers can be seen at high
tide roosts between December and March. Length: 23-25cm. |
