Lapwing

(Vanellus vanellus )

AKA Northern Lapwing, Peewit (because of the call they make) and Green Plover) With their wheeling and diving flight over farmland and pasture nothing signals summer for me quite like the lapwing. A pretty bird which sadly, due to changes in traditional farming methods is on the decline. Breeds in the summer on pasture land. A resident bird that is widespread throughout the UK.

From September onwards large flocks of juvenile and adult lapwings move onto inland lakes. The juveniles, like in the photo below, are recogniseable from their buff coloured faces and short head tufts.

Early October at Martinmere and large flocks of Lapwings are easily spooked!
