Although this duck has bred well in captivity it is still endangered in the wild. It is said to be at high risk due to severe weather, disease, accidental introductions, and habitat degradation. It is to be found on the Layson Island (nw Hawaiian Archipelago) on brackish ponds and surrounding grassy upland areas. Its diet consists of aquatic insects, brine shrimp and seeds. |
