Lesser Scaup

(Aythya affinis)

One of the commonest and most widespread dabbling ducks in North America that winters throughout California, the West Indies and north South America. Breeds on upland pond areas, marshes and prairies. Diet is made up of aquatic vegetation and invertebrates. The male utters a low purring call but the female is silent. It can be distinguished from the very similar Greater Scaup by its smaller size.
