A widespread and common finch seen all
the year round. Found most commonly on lowland particularly beside the
coast and heaths though also found increasingly in suburban habitats.
A very flighty bird that is difficult to get close to but can be seen
in large flocks in winter and is identified by its twittering call and
undulating flight. During the breeding season it prefers areas of scrub
such as gorse or blackthorn, suitable hedges, especially hawthorn, or
low trees. Its diet consists of seeds and insects. The photos below
show the male bird. The female is drabber with heavier streaking on
her breast. Juveniles look similar to the female birds. |
