Little Grebe

(Tachybaptus ruficollis)

The UKs smallest grebe that seems to spend more time under the water than on the top of it. A small dumpy bird with a fluffy rear end. It is a widespread, resident bird found usually lakes, gravel pits, canals and rivers where there is slow moving water with plenty of emergent vegetation amongst which to feed and take cover. During the winter months they can also be found on coastal habitats. Its diet consists of insects and larvae. Length: 25-29cm.
