A wader similar to the Ringed Plover .
Not easily identified by size alone when seen on its own, but can be
told apart from its distinctive yellow eye ring and black beak. Also
in flight this bird lacks the white wing bar that the Ringed Plover
has. A summer visitor and breeder to England and much of Wales this
bird can be found anywhere there is freshwater. Preferred sites include
gravel pits, sand quarries, sewage farms and reservoirs. They can also
be found alongside rivers where there is a shingle shore. Their diet
consists of insects. They arrive for breeding in March and return to
Africa in late June/early July. |
