Little stint

Calidris minuta

A tiny passage migrant wading bird with a short straight fine black bill and medium-length black legs. They breed on the Arctic Tundra and it is the juveniles that are seen in the UK in autumn with small numbers of adults being seen in spring. It can be seen in sheltered estuaries and pools as well as inland on the edges of lakes and reservoirs where there is exposed mud. It feeds on a diet mainly of insects; also crustaceans and molluscs. It can be seen mainly August to September and in spring late-April to early June. Most birds spend the winter in Africa.
