Long tailed tits

(Aegithalos caudatus)

Relatively common in the north west these little birds can be quite challenging to photograph as they are constantly on the move. A resident bird its population has increased dramatically as a result of milder winters. Twelve months ago I would have waited at feeders for them to come close in but now I like to photograph my birds in their more natural environment.

Often seen in large flocks in the winter months Long tailed tits will readily come onto bird feeders. Timid they might look but they certainly are not. I have approached these birds to within 6 foot of a feeder before they fly away and that is braver than any other bird.
