Magpie

(Pica pica)

This noisy member of the crow family has a reputation for being a scavenger and a destroyer of other birds nests. A widespread resident bird it can be found in a wide range of habitats from urban gardens and parks to lowland areas, woods and farms. It is absent though from the highlands of Scotland. Non breeding birds can also be found in large groups or parliaments. Their diet is omniverous and will take a wide range of foods.

A juvenile Magpie

Magpies are a very arrogant though sociable bird out of the breeding season. At Pennington flash there are alot of non breeding birds. One day I looked up upon hearing the most terrible screaming. One bird had another pinned down and the one below was making the most awful noise. Quickly I managed to get a quick photo shown below. Once the fight had stopped they went back to feeding side by side quite amicably.

Mid summer and this juvenile magpie is doing his best to make humself heard. But the adult magpie is doing his best to ignore him!
