Willow tit (Parus montanus)
A rare visitor to the garden bird table this little tit is more at home in mature woodland. A cheeky but somewhat shy bird that I never tire of watching. The following photographs show a pair of Willow tits that I watched one afternoon in August as they foraged for food for their young brood.
This may be a small caterpiller or grub the bird has found for one of his chicks. Whatever it is he found it in amongst the blackberry flowers.
At intervals the birds also take time out to feed themselves. Here one of the pair can be seen visiting one of the feeding stumps. They will eat seeds and nuts. It is a quick easy meal for them and full of protein so they can spend most of their time searching for suitable food for their brood.
