Meadow pipit

Anthus pratensis

A resident to the UK this is one of the commonest songbirds found in upland areas, moors, heathland, fens, grassland and coastal marshes. Its high piping call and parachuting display flight are common sights during the breeding season. In winter they move to lower ground preferring ploghed farmland and pastures where they can be found in small groups. It feeds on a diet of insects, beetles, moths and spiders. can be confused with the Tree pipit which has a thicker beak, shorter hind claw and is more Tawny in colour.
