Mute Swans

A portrait of mating and Display

The place was Pennington Flash and the date April 17th 2005. I had sat for quite some time watching the Pen (female) swan putting the finishing touches to a very impressive nest. The Cob (male) was over the other side of the lagoon feeding and seemed quite content, when the female swam over to join him. Hoping to see the pair of them mating I readied my camera. This was something that I had never seen before so I was delighted not only to see them mate but also to witness the beautiful display that took place afterwards. The following photographs shows the entire sequance of their intimacy.

Once the display was over the pair went their seperate ways, the male to carry on feeding and the female to sit back on her nest. Now all that remains is to await the arrival of the cygnets.
