New Zealand Scaup

(Aythya novaeseelandiae)

This species is the most common of the small New Zealand ducks and is still fairly widespread on the island. They are diving ducks that tend to be found on large bodies of clean water and can dive to a depth of 2-3 metres in search of fresh water snails and aquatic plants. They are social birds often nesting in loose colonies. Threatened in the wild. Male shown below with the female in the second photograph.
