North American black duck

(Anas rubripes)

This duck is thought to have evolved from the prairie dwelling Mallard and then seperated from it by the Appalachian mountains. However, increased modern interbreeding with the Mallard is putting this species at risk. It is to be found largely in northern and eastern US, where it feeds on a diet of aquatic vegetation and invertebrates.
