Nuthatch (Sitta europaea)
Alongside the Woodpecker the gravity defying Nuthatch is my favourite bird. Whereever I go I listen out for its bubbling call. They are reasonably shy birds prefering the tops of trees but in winter they will come down to feeders where suet and peanuts are readily taken. Usually found where there are mature deciduous trees though they are not commonly found everywhere.

Nuthatches nest in holes in trees. In order to keep larger birds out they collect mud and plaster it into the hole thus reducing its size.
