Oystercatcher

Haematopus ostralegus

A fairly large and very distinction black and white wader. A resident bird it can be seen commonly in most coastal regions. It breeds on shingle, beaches and salt marshes on the coast or on shingle banks of rivers, lakes and gravel pits inland. Its diet consists of mussels and cockles on the coast and mainly worms inland. It has a loud, shrill, piping ‘kleep-kleep' call.
