Philippine Duck

(Anas luzonica)

This is an endemic species of the Philippines that was once common and widespread. Sadly over the last three decades the population has steeply declined. It can be found in fresh and saltwater habitats such as mangroves, rivers and the open sea. It feeds on a diet of fish, shrimps, insects, rice and young vegetation. Sexes are alike. With its smoky blue bill and chesnut and dark brown head this is a very striking and beautiful duck. The photo below was taken with the canon 350d.

The photo below shows Philippine ducklings that are approx 7 days old. These young birds were inside an incubator and will stay there until they are ready to go outside in the nursery pens.

and here are those same ducklings 4 weeks later. I cant believe how much they have grown!
