Northern Pintail

(Anas acuta)

During the winter months this long necked, elegant duck can be seen in their hundreds at Martinmere, after migrating south from Iceland. Elsewhere Pintails favour coastal marshes and estuaries, flooded grassland, lakes and reservoirs. During the summer it is a rare and locallised breeder found mainly on moorland pools and lakes, as well as marshes in Eastern England. Their diet consists of a variety of aquatic vegetation and invertebrates. The female is slightly smaller than the male.
