Plumed whistling duck

(Dendrocygna eytoni)

Along with the Mandarin and the Woodduck this species has got to be one of the most unusually coloured and beautifulof ducks. The colouring is a subtle salmon colour with the long, plumed side feathers giving this duck quite an air of sophistication. This bird is native to the lowlands of northeastern Australia where it can be found on margins of swamps, marshes, mangroves, grassland and scrub. It feeds mainly at night on plant material such as grasses and seeds. Sadly I have only ever seen this duck once and it was on a very hot day which has resulted in the following rather underexposed photos.
