Puna Teal

(Anas versicolor puna)

Previously thought of as a subspecies of the Silver Teal the Puna Teal is common and widespread throughout the lakes of the puna zone of the Andes in South America. Isolated from the Silver Teal it is now considered a full species. The sexes are alike though the male is larger than the female. This is a resident species, a dabbling duck, found on high-altitude freshwater lakes with fringe vegetation. Having watched this duck over the last couple of years I used to think it was a very shy, unassuming duck but this month (June 05) they proved me wrong. Always seen in pairs they were very vocal indeed!
