A medium sized wader that is mainly a winter
visitor to this country. A few birds breed in Scotland but most breed
in the Arctic Tundra of Europe and North America. This wader has the
northern most winter range of any shorebird. In the winter it can be
found along rocky shores, stoney beaches, surflines and piers where
it feeds on a diet of insects and crustaceans. Sexes are similar though
females are slightly larger with a longer bill. In flight it shows a
thin white wing-stripe. Length: 20-22 cm |
