The Radjah Shelducks are divided into
two races: Tadorna radjah rufitergum and Tadorna radjah radjah, the
other being commonly called the Red backed Rajah Shelduck. The black
backed is found around the coast of New Guinea and on the Molucca Islands
where they inhabit the coastal marshes, lagoons and swamps. They are
dabbling ducks which feed mainly at night. Their diet consists of mollusks,
insects, sedge materials and algae. They form long term pair bonds and
are usually seen either in pairs or in small groups. The sexes are alike. |
