Red breasted goose

(Branta ruficollis)

What this tiny little goose lacks in height it easily makes up for in voice as this is easily one of the noisiest geese that I have ever come across. Related to the Brent goose it breeds in Arctic Europe and winters in south eastern Europe. Sometimes it is a rare vagrant to GB where it can be found in amongst flocks of Brent geese.

This goose in the wild is classed as vulnerable because of a threat to its habitat. There is a small flock at Martinmere. They are quite a difficult bird to photograph because they are so dark, making exposure tricky. I loved the RB goose in the photo below as he looked like he was all tied up in knots!
