Redhead

(Aythya americana)

This species comes from the West and southwest USA. It can sometimes be confused with the Canvasback but is easily recognised by its yellow eye and blue bill. Found in open wetland their diet consists of aquatic plants, seeds, insects and small invertebrates. Redheads do most of their feeding at night, spending the daylight hours resting on water. It is a species said to be in decline due to loss of habitat and hunting pressures.
