Red necked Grebe

(Podiceps grisegena)

This bird has quite a wide range being found across Europe, western Asia and northwestern North America. Suspected of breeding in the UK this bird is mainly to be found in the winter months when birds from Europe migrate across. Similar to a great crested grebe in winter plumage but slightly smaller and stockier it can be found in coastal areas and occasionally on large inland lakes. Its diet consists of fish, crustaceans and aquatic insects. Like all grebes, it nests on the water's edge, since its legs are set very far back and it cannot walk well. Length 40-46 cm. The bird shown in the photos below was seen at Pennington Flash, UK where it stayed for about a week in November 2005.
