With its bright red beak and legs the redshank
is one of our most common and distinctive resident waders. The greatest
concentrations of breeding birds are in parts of Scotland and north-west
England but in winter half of all the birds seen could have come from
Iceland. Preferred breeding habitat is found on wet meadows inland and
on coastal saltmarshes. In winter it can be found in many coastal habitats
as well as inland lakes and reservoirs. Its diet consists of insects,
earthworms, molluscs and crustaceans. This bird is widespread and can
be seen all year round. |
