A summer visitor found mainly in the north
and west with major concentrations found in Wales. It is to be seen
from April until October. A chat like bird that bobs like a robin but
its habits are very different. Breeds in mature woodland, especially
oakwoods and Scots pine in the west and north of the UK. This is a cavity
nester that will also nest in a nestbox. The males are very striking
and brightly coloured but the female is brown as are the juveniles.
Its diet consists of mainly insects; also spiders, worms and berries.
The pair below was photographed at Carsington Water in Derbyshire. He
and the female, were feeding their newly hatched chicks in a nest box
in a deciduous wood. |
