Reed bunting

(Emberiza schoeniclus)

A slim, sparrow sized, resident bird that has suffered such a population decline that it is now under threat. During the summer it can be found in stands of wet vegetation where there are stands of reeds. In Bolton it can be readily found on numerous managed nature reserves where there is water. During the winter it can be found in drier places such as plantation edges and more regularly it is appearing on peoples bird tables. When singing the male can usually be seen perched on top of a bush, or reed. Its diet consists of seeds and insects. Length: 15-16.5cm.
