Ringed plover

(Charadrius hiaticula)

S Ireland August 2006

A small, dumpy, short legged, resident breeding wader. This bird was once found nesting only on shingle beaches around the coast but is now increasingly found inland on gravel pits It is a social bird often being seen in small flocks. Its yellow bill with black tip and lack of yellow eye ring instantly set it apart from its close cousin the Little ringed plover. In flight it also shows a broad white wing-stripe. The UK birds are mostly resident but the population is added to in winter by birds from Greenland and Canada on migration. Its diet consists of flies, spiders, marine worms, crustaceans and molluscs.
