Sandmartin

Riparia riparia

At only 12cms in length Sand martins are the smallest of the European hirundines. A gregarious bird it will breed in large colonies anyway there are sandy river banks, earth banks and quarries. They are agile fliers feeding on insects over the water and can often be found perched on overhead wires and branches. It is a summer visitor being seen March through to October spending the winter months in the Sahel region of Africa.
