At only 12cms in length Sand martins are
the smallest of the European hirundines. A gregarious bird it will breed
in large colonies anyway there are sandy river banks, earth banks and
quarries. They are agile fliers feeding on insects over the water and
can often be found perched on overhead wires and branches. It is a summer
visitor being seen March through to October spending the winter months
in the Sahel region of Africa. |
