Short eared owl

Asio flammeus

A medium-sized owl averaging 34–43 cm with a wingspan of 38 to 44 inches. The females being slightly larger thanthe males. It has one of the most widespread distributions of all the birds being found on all continents except Antarctica and Australia. It is a normadic wanderer going where populations of voles is highest. It is found in open country and grasslands. This owl hunts mainly at night but it can also be seen during the daytime. Its diet consists of rodents, mainly voles but they will also take large insects and sometimes small birds. Sexual maturity is reached at one year old.
