In North America also known as the horned
Grebe due to its golden ear tufts whilst in breeding plumage. In this
country it breeds only in the north east of Scotland on hill lochs,
gravel pits and lowland lochs. During the winter months it is found
extensively in sheltered coastal waters and inland lakes near to the
coast. Larger populations can be found in the south of England. They
return to their breeding grounds in March/April. A rather small grebe
only 31-38cm in length. It feeds on a diet of fish and insect larvae.
The bird below was photographed on Fairhaven lake, Lytham December 3rd
