Plectrophenax nivalis

A large bunting, the Snow bunting is a bird of the high actic regions from Scandinavia to Alaska, Canada and Greenland. Small populations breed in the north of Scotland. The male returns to its breeding grounds in early April but the female does not return until 4-6 weeks later. Move south in the winter and are found around the UK coastline particularly in the north and east on shingle beaches and open fields. Breeding male clean black-and-white, female streaked with gray and rufous. Similar in nonbreeding plumage, but female with darker wings. Their diet consists of seeds and insects.
