South African Black duck

(Anas sparsa)

Found mainly in southern and eastern Africa, from Ethiopia, through Sudan and east Africa. Found mainly in highland areas along fast-flowing streams with plenty of bordering woodland. During the dry season it can also be found on lakes and other waterways. The sexes are alike but when seen in pairs the male is noticeably bigger than the female. A blue speculum is visible in flight. Nesting is on the ground near dense vegetation. Not globally threatened but deforestation, damming and water projects have all led to declines in local populations.
