Starling

(Sturnus vulgaris)

Noisy and gregarious, this bird needs no real introduction. Alongside the House sparrow it is one of our most common and widespread breeding garden birds. They are cavity nesters and can be found in rural areas, parks and hedgerows. In winter it can be seen in much larger numbers in fields and around coasts, and also in very large winter roosts. Its diet is varied, including insects and berries.

Juveniles are very variable as they develop their adult plumage. When they first fledge their plumage is just plain brown and lacks any of the glossy spotting of the adults. The head is always the last part of the plumage to change. All the birds in the photos below are juveniles.
