Barn Swallow

(Hirundo rustica)

The Barn Swallow is the UKs most well known summer visitor with everyone looking out for the first to arrive, usually around late April/early May. Arriving from their wintering grounds in south Africa they will often produce two broods before returning back in late September.

Swallows build cup shape nests made out of mud under the eaves of buildings. The first chicks fledge around mid/late June. Fledgling Swallows are a joy to photograph as they can be seen and watched so easily as they perch on roof ledges. Below is a study of one nest of fledglings as they begin to fledge.
