Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) |
The Barn Swallow is the UKs most well known
summer visitor with everyone looking out for the first to arrive, usually
around late April/early May. Arriving from their wintering grounds in
south Africa they will often produce two broods before returning back
in late September. |

Swallows build cup shape nests made out
of mud under the eaves of buildings. The first chicks fledge around
mid/late June. Fledgling Swallows are a joy to photograph as they can
be seen and watched so easily as they perch on roof ledges. Below is
a study of one nest of fledglings as they begin to fledge. |
