Swan Goose

Anser cygnoides

The Swan Goose is native to central Siberia and winters in China. It is often found in the mouths of rivers, in lakes and in marshes. as well as in mountainous regions and on steppe terra. In the past this goose has been raised for its eggs and as a result is the direct parent of the domestic Chinese goose. The sexes are alike but the female is smaller than the male, with a shorter bill and neck. Swan geese are mainly vegetarian and whilst do feed on sedges they are mostly to be found on dry land grazing. The photo below shows a very impressive male.
